The Newcomer’s Guide to Boston Sports Teams

Boston is recognized for its history and local attractions, as well as the many universities you'll find throughout the city, but Boston is even more popular for its role as one of the greatest sports towns in the US. If you just moved to Boston, congratulations! Your new hometown teams are among the nation's best. Here's your guide to enjoying every season.

Boston Sports Teams

Professional sports in Boston is filled with stories, records, legends, and superstitions that are unlike any other. Here you’ll find your new favorite team; wear their colors proudly.

New England Patriots

  • What They Play: Football (NFL/AFC East)
  • Team Colors: Red, White, Blue, and Silver
  • Where They Play: Gillette Stadium

Among Boston's famed sports teams, the New England Patriots enjoy an especially enthusiastic following. They have won 20 division championships, 11 conference championships, and have won the Super Bowl six times, most recently in the 2018 season, making them tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the most successful team in Super Bowl history.

Following some rocky and controversial ownership changes in the 90s, the Patriots almost moved to St. Louis. They were bought by Robert Kraft in 1994 who kept them in Boston. Since then, they have sold out every home game that they have played before their passionate and grateful fans.

Boston Red Sox

  • What They Play: Baseball (MLB/AL East)
  • Team Colors: Red, White, and Blue
  • Where They Play: Fenway Park

The Boston Red Sox is among the most beloved baseball teams in the country, with an exceptionally enthusiastic fan base. Their home since 1912 has been Fenway Park, home of the Green Monster left-field wall and one of the most treasured shrines in the baseball universe. With World Series wins in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018, they are also among the most successful baseball teams in the MLB.

The Red Sox have been home to an exceptional roster of talent, but one of their players stands out. In 1919, the Red Sox famously traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees; Ruth went on to have arguably the greatest career in the history of the game. This trade ignited a rivalry between the Red Sox and Yankees that still goes on to this day.

Boston Celtics

  • What They Play: Basketball (NBA/Eastern Conference)
  • Team Colors: Green, Gold, Black, Brown, White
  • Where They Play: TD Garden Arena

With 17 championships (in 1957, 1959-1966, 1968-69, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986, and 2008) The Boston Celtics are arguably not just the greatest basketball dynasty in history, they are also the most successful Boston team. Noted for their famed rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Celtics dominated basketball throughout the 60's, 70's, and 80’s, and have experienced a resurgence in the 2000s.

The Celtics have counted among their number some of the most iconic names in the sport, including Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, and Larry Bird. With perennial appearances in the playoffs, Boston fans know that it's only a matter of time until the next championship title goes to the Celtics.

Boston Bruins

  • What They Play: Hockey (NHL/Eastern Conference)
  • Team Colors: Black and Gold
  • Where They Play: TD Garden Arena

Boston's cold winters produce a passionate interest in winter sports, including hockey. The Boston Bruins have provided fans with six Stanley Cups in return for their devotion (1928–29, 1938–39, 1940–41, 1969–70, 1971–72, 2010–11). Founded as an expansion franchise in 1924, the Bruins have played host to some of the greatest talents to ever hit the ice, including Bobby Orr, who holds the record for most assists in a season, and Phil Esposito, who holds the records for both most goals and most points scored in a season.

One of the fun aspects of a Bruins game is the use of unique and quirky musical numbers throughout the event. Selections from classical to punk are used for intros, when hitting the ice, for faceoffs, and for goals. Many of these song choices were recorded by local bands and reference other Boston teams.

Other Boston Sports

Other Boston professional teams include:

  • The New England Revolution, a major league soccer (MLS) team.
  • The Boston Cannons, a professional lacrosse team (MLL) who won their league’s championship in 2011.
  • The Boston Pride, a professional women’s ice hockey team.
